Has 48 HR Mag Been Shut Down?

NOT YET

What the media is saying about 48 HR Magazine:
"it is a remarkable artifact" -- The New York Times

"one of the most technologically interesting magazine projects today" -- PBS

"amongst the staff cutbacks and closures a new appetite for experimentation has emerged. One of the most ambitious is the newly created 48hr Magazine" -- BBC

"A successful time-trial for magazines." -- New York Observer

"it's hard to beat the sheer audaciousness of the bright young media things in San Francisco who turned a magazine around in 48 hours" -- CoolHunting

"Buy" -- The Village Voice

"It has come to the attention of CBS that you recently commenced use of the name 48 HR MAGAZINE (the "Name") for a new print magazine featuring various topics of interest, news and current events, and have established a website, www.48hrmag.com, to solicit contributions and promote the magazine. Your use of the Name in connection with a news product, namely, a magazine containing newsowrthy content, renders it extremely likely that consumers will associate the magazine with CBS and the highly successful 48 HOURS Properties and cause confusion with and trade off of the reputation and goodwill associated with 48 Hours Properties. Accordingly, your use is unlawful and constitutes trademark infringement, dilution and unfair competition in violation of the Lanham Act and applicable state laws.

As CBS vigorously protects its intellectual property rights, we must demand that you immediately cease any and all use or proposed use of the Name, including discontinuing use of the Name in print and online and as part of your domain name." -- CBS

So, we made a magazine.

We made it start to finish in 48 hours. On May 7, 2010 we announced a theme, took submissions on that theme throughout the next day, then edited and laid out a magazine all in the course of a single weekend. We thought it was going to be very small, but instead we received 1502 submissions and turned out a glorious 60-page book. It was epic.

But like we said, we expected it to be small. We didn't take the normal start-up magazine precautions. We didn't set up an LLC. We're personably liable. We're writers. We have very little money. If they want to, CBS will break us.

We don't want to be broken.

We hope to work out an amicable agreement with CBS, but we don't know exactly what that will entail yet. We set up this site in case we have to take http://48hrmag.com down quickly. (We're hoping to avoid that.) But no matter what, you can look here for news and information about the future of our project.
